In VitroThrombin is a serine protease known to have a fundamental role in the clotting cascade. In addition, Thrombin also mediates several cellular processes through a unique family of protease-activated receptors (PARS), where PAR-1 is the prototype. Thrombin and PAR-1 are highly expressed in the brain and regulate synaptic transmission and plasticity[1]. Thrombin belongs to the chymotrypsin family and is generated by proteolytic cleavage of its inactive precursor prothrombin by the proThrombinase complex. Thrombin mediates the conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin, the main constituent of a blood clot. Furthermore, Thrombin activates the blood coagulation factors V, VIII, XI, XIII and the anticoagulant protein C[2].
