Calcium chromate Usage And Synthesis

DescriptionCalcium chromate is a yellow crystalline solid, often used in solution. Odorless. It normally occurs as thedehydrate and loses water at 200℃. Molecularweight=192.1. Hazard Identification (based on NFPA-704M Rating System): Health 2, Flammability 0, Reactivity 0.Insoluble in water.
Chemical PropertiesCalcium chromate is a yellow crystallinesolid, often used in solution. Odorless. It normally occursas the dehydrate and loses water @ 200C.
UsesAs a pigment, corrosion inhibitor; manufacture of chromium; in oxidizing reactions; in battery depolarization.
UsesCalcium chromate is used as a corrosion inhibitor and pigment. It is also used as a depolarizer in batteries and a metal coating and primer. Further, it is used in electroplating, photochemical processing and industrial waste treatment.
General DescriptionCALCIUM CHROMATE is a yellow powder. CALCIUM CHROMATE is slightly soluble in water. The primary hazard is the threat to the environment. Immediate steps should be taken to prevent its spread to the environment.
Air & Water ReactionsInsoluble in water.
Reactivity ProfileCALCIUM CHROMATE is a strong oxidizer and reacts with acids and ethanol.
HazardProbable carcinogen.
Health HazardInhalation causes irritation of nose and throat. Ingestion causes severe circulatory collapse and chronic nephritis. Contact with eyes causes irritation. Contact with skin may cause dermatitis and ulcers.
reaction suitabilitycore: chromium
reagent type: catalyst
Safety ProfileSuspected human carcinogen with experimental carcinogenic, neoplastigenic, and tumorigenic data. Experimental reproductive effects. Mutation data reported. A powerful oxiduer. Mixture with boron burns violently if ignited. See also CHROMIUM COMPOUNDS and CALCIUM COMPOUNDS.
Potential ExposureCalcium chromate is used as a pigment, corrosion inhibitor; in the manufacture of chromium;in oxidizing reactions; in battery depolarization.
First aidIf this chemical gets into the eyes, remove anycontact lenses at once and irrigate immediately for at least30 min, occasionally lifting upper and lower lids. Seekmedical attention immediately. If this chemical contactsthe skin, remove contaminated clothing and wash immediately with soap and water. Seek medical attention immediately. If this chemical has been inhaled, remove fromexposure, begin rescue breathing (using universal precautions, including resuscitation mask) if breathing hasstopped and CPR if heart action has stopped. Transferpromptly to a medical facility. When this chemical hasbeen swallowed, get medical attention. Give large quantities of water and induce vomiting. Do not make an unconscious person vomit.
storageColor Code—Blue (carcinogen): Health Hazard:Store in a secure poison location. Calcium chromate mustbe stored to avoid contact with combustible, organic, orother easily oxidized materials (such as paper, wood, sulfur, aluminum, hydrazine and plastics) since violent reactionsoccur. A regulated, marked area should be established where this chemical is handled, used, or stored in compliance with OSHA Standard 1910.1045.
ShippingUN3288 Toxic solids, inorganic, n.o.s., HazardClass: 6.1; Labels: 6.1-Poisonous materials, TechnicalName Required
IncompatibilitiesA strong oxidizer. Incompatible withboron (violent reaction), ethanol, combustibles, organic, orother easily oxidized materials.
Waste DisposalReduce to trivalent chromiumand precipitate as chromium(III) hydroxide. Compact thesludge and dispose in single purpose special wastedumps
