| Chemical Properties | Carboxymethylcellulose calcium occurs as a white to yellowishwhite, hygroscopic, odorless powder. |
| Uses | Pharmaceutic aid (tabletdisintegrant). |
| Production Methods | Cellulose, obtained from wood pulp or cotton fibers, is carboxymethylated, followed by conversion to the calcium salt. It is thengraded on the basis of its degree of carboxymethylation andpulverized. |
| Pharmaceutical Applications | The main use of carboxymethylcellulose calcium is in tabletformulations, where it is used as a binder, diluent, and disintegrant. Although carboxymethylcellulose calcium isinsoluble in water, it is an effective tablet disintegrant as it swells toseveral times its original bulk on contact with water. Concentrationsup to 15% w/w may be used in tablet formulations; above thisconcentration, tablet hardness is reduced. Carboxymethylcellulose calcium is also used in other applicationssimilarly to carboxymethylcellulose sodium; for example, as asuspending or viscosity-increasing agent in oral and topicalpharmaceutical formulations. Carboxymethylcellulose calcium isalso used in modern wound dressings for its water absorption, retention and hemostatic properties. |
| Safety | Carboxymethylcellulose calcium is used in oral and topicalpharmaceutical formulations, similarly to carboxymethylcellulosesodium, and is generally regarded as a nontoxic and nonirritantmaterial. However, as with other cellulose derivatives, oralconsumption of large amounts of carboxymethylcellulose calciummay have a laxative effect. |
| storage | Carboxymethylcellulose calcium is a stable, though hygroscopicmaterial. It should be stored in a well-closed container in a cool, dryplace. |
| Regulatory Status | Included in the FDA Inactive Ingredients Database (oral, capsulesand tablets). Included in nonparenteral medicines licensed in theUK. Included in the Canadian List of Acceptable Non-medicinalIngredients. |
