Glycerol tristearate Usage And Synthesis
| Description | Glyceryl tristearate is prepared by reacting glycerin with stearicacid in the presence of a suitable catalyst such as aluminum oxide. It also occurs in many animal and vegetable fats such as tallowand cocoa butter. It is a white, microfine crystalline powder. It issoluble in hot alcohol, benzene and chloroform, very slightly solublein cold alcohol, in ether and in petroleum ether, and insolublein water. |
| Chemical Properties | off-white to cream powder |
| Uses | Present in animal and vegetable fats. |
| Uses | In textile sizes. Formerly in making candles. |
| Uses | tristearin is an emollient. |
| Uses | Glyceryl Tristearate is a formulation aid, lubricant, and release agent, prepared by reacting stearic acid with glycerol in the presence of a suitable catalyst. The additive is used as a crystallization accelerator in cocoa products; a formulation aid in confections; a formulation in fats and oils; and a winterization and fractionation aid in fat and oil processing. |
| Definition | ChEBI: Tristearoylglycerol is a triglyceride that is glycerol in which all three hydroxy groups have been formally esterified with stearic acid. It has a role as a plant metabolite and a Caenorhabditis elegans metabolite. It derives from an octadecanoic acid. |
| Flammability and Explosibility | Non flammable |
| Safety Profile | When heated to decomposition it emits acrid smoke and irritating fumes. |
