| Uses | Iridium(III) chloride is used in iridium electroplating, in making the standard meter bar of paris and crucibles. It is used for high temperature electrical contacts, as hardening agent, in tipping pens and compass bearings and Pt/Ir spark plugs. It is used for medical, surgical or other patient oriented applications, MMO (mixed metal oxide) titanium electrode coatings and as a starting material for heterogeneous catalysts. |
| Synthesis | Iridium to hexachloro iridium (IV) acid ammonium (NH4) 2 [IrCl6] form from the platinum system elements, it is reduced by the hydrogen stream, to get the spongy metal iridium, which then reacts with chlorine at 300-400 ?? C to produce iridium trichloride. It has the same AlCl3 structure as rhodium trichloride. By co-heating hydrated iridium(III) oxide with hydrochloric acid, a hydrate of iridium trichloride can be crystallized. |
