Costus oil Usage And Synthesis

Chemical PropertiesThe oil is obtained in approximately 0.7% yields by steam distillation after maceration in water of the comminuteddried roots. Since the oil contains water-soluble components and has a specific gravity similar to that of water, it is subsequentlyrecovered from the distillation waters by extraction with solvents. The oil has a characteristic persistent odor reminiscent of orris, violet and vetiver.
Physical propertiesCostus oil is a viscous, pale-yellow to yellowish-brown liquid. It is soluble in most fixed oils andin mineral oil. It is insoluble in glycerin and propylene glycol.
UsesEssential oil EP Reference standard, intended for use in laboratory tests only as specifically prescribed in the European Pharmacopoeia.
DefinitionExtractives and their physically modified derivatives. Saussurea lappa, Compositae.
Essential oil compositionThe main constituents include myrcene, p-cymene, l-limalool, β-ionone, sesquiterpenes, costolactoneand a small amount of palmitic acid.
SynthesisWhen the production of dry tuberous woodruff root raw products, net system, cut into 2 mm thick slices, take 300 g, placed in the pot, 150 ?? fried to the surface of the yellowish, removed and cooled, crushed, through a 20-mesh sieve, add 3 times the volume of methanol, soaking overnight at room temperature, loaded into the percolator cylinder, 10 times the volume of methanol at 10 ?? percolation extraction, percolation filtration, decompression recovery of methanol to the final volume of 200 ml or so, concentrated liquid Add 700 ml of distilled water to adjust the methanol content volume ratio of about 20%, extracted with ether, 2500 ml ?? 1, the extract was dried and filtered with anhydrous Na2SO4, hot water bath distillation and concentration, ice water condensation, recycling of ether, to the distillation of the container is still left about 100 mL of solution, stop the distillation, take out the residual solution, put in a fume hood in the volatile exhaust of ether, the residue is refined by molecular distillation. The residue was refined by molecular distillation, the distillation pressure was 0.13 mbar, the scraping rate was 200 r/min, the feed rate was 1.2 g/min, and the distillate was collected at 160 ?? or less, which was obtained as the wood fragrance oil.
