Part A: Preparation of N,N'-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-1,7-dibromoperylene-3,4:9,10-bis(dicarboxylic imide) (PDI2EH-Br2)1,7-Dibromoperylene-3,4:9,10-dianhydride (PDABr2) (5.10 g, 9.35 mmol) was mixed with 2-ethylhexylamine (5.60 mL, 34.2 mmol) in propionic acid (80 mL). The reaction mixture was heated to reflux for 16 h. After cooling to room temperature, the resulting solid was collected by filtration. It was washed several times with propionic acid and then with methanol (MeOH), dried overnight and filtered to give 7.57 g of crude product. Purification by column chromatography (with CHCl3 as eluent) afforded PDI2EH-Br2 red solid (5.12 g, 6.63 mmol, yield 65.2%). Melting point >200 °C; 1H NMR (CDCl3, 500 MHz): δ 9.48 (d, 2H, J = 8.0 Hz), 8.92 (s, 2H), 8.69 (d, 2H, J = 8.0 Hz), 4.20-4.11 (m, 4H), 2.00-1.92 (m, 2H), 1.50-1.35 (m, 8H), 1.35 -1.24(m, 8H), 0.96(d, 6H, J = 7.5 Hz), 0.91(t, 6H, J = 7.0 Hz); Elemental Analysis (Calculated values: C, 62.19; H, 5.22; N, 3.63): C, 62.20; H, 5.43; N, 3.33.
